Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics: Twitter erupts as opening ceremony suffers 'ring malfunction'

Having suffered reports of 'appalling conditions' and unfinished facilities, the organisers of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony were probably hoping things would go without a hitch.

However the lavish show suffered a major hiccup just minutes after it had begun – after a snowflake designed to represent one of the Olympic rings failed to behave itself.

The moment in question saw a troupe of dancers, in national costume, performing below a backdrop of snowflakes, each of which was meant to transform itself into one of the rings.

But when the number ended, the fifth ring on the right hand side had remained stubbornly closed – with the huge display apparent for millions of viewers worldwide to see.

Naturally viewers – no doubt suppressing their sniggers with their other hand – quickly took to Twitter to comment on the gaffe.
‘£30Billion and they couldn’t even get the rings right!’ pointed out one viewer, while another added: ‘Oops. Malfunction! One of the massive Olympic doilies is broke. Someone must pay!’

Elsewhere, a pattern emerged among tweets, with a viewer saying: ‘The person responsible for that fifth ring is currently being dragged into the basement of the Lubyanka,’ and another, along similar lines, commenting: ‘Snowflake transformation designer just left by the back door and transferred their home phone to an exchange somewhere in Siberia!’

Meanwhile another, taking a cheeky swipe at the controversy over Russia’s stance on gay rights, added: ‘The ring on the far right is obviously gay & not included!’
