iOS 8 is now installed on over half of all active iOS devices, according to Apple’s own data. The adoption statistics displayed on the company’s Developer Support pages show that iOS 8 is now running on 52% of iOS devices with 43% running iOS 7 and only 5% running older versions of the operating system.

Earlier this month, it appeared that iOS 8 adoption was stagnating, jumping only 1% in the period between September 21 and October 5, 2014. Adoption has apparently seen a bump in the last couple of weeks, potentially due to the release of iOS 8.1 and the functionality it brings with it — namely Apple Pay and Continuity features between iOS and Mac devices.

The iOS 8 update process has been a rocky road so far for Apple. In late September, the company botched its first bug fix release for iOS 8 with iOS 8.0.1. The update rendered Touch ID useless for many iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users and, more seriously, left some without cellular functionality. The update was pulled speedily and was corrected the following day with iOS 8.0.2 but this might have put off a number of people from upgrading their devices.

Further, the iOS 8 update requires a large amount of free space on the device being updated when completing the process over the air. For some, particularly those with smaller storage capacity devices, this meant there was the added hassle of deciding which content to delete before upgrading. While users can plug into iTunes and avoid deleting anything from their iPhone or iPad, many have grown used to the OTA updating process and find completing a cable upgrade cumbersome in itself.

iOS 8′s adoption is still slower than previous iOS updates, including iOS 7 and iOS 6.
